A Yorkshire terrier was abandoned by her breeders after she suffered a severe injury following an attack. Fortunately, she now lives in a new home with a fur mom who loves her.
Rescuers from The Mayhew Animal Home, an animal charity in London, found the Yorkie in Brent, North London and named her Mitzi. Dried blood had caked on the fur on the left side of her body, and the pooch almost couldn’t walk.
Mitzi was also scared of everything. The rescuers eventually learned that another canine had attacked the Yorkie, and her breeders merely left her there.
Zoe Edwards, the Animal Welfare Manager for the charity, says that sadly, Mitzi’s case was not unique. They see more unwanted dogs than they would like, and many of these animals come from irresponsible breeders.
They either make a profit from the dogs or use them to produce a litter. Once they could no longer make money from the canines, these breeders unceremoniously dump the animals.
Mayhew’s veterinary team examined the Yorkie and found her to be suffering from a fever. She was also dehydrated and listless.
Hence, the veterinarians immediately initiated treatment for shock. They administered fluids intravenously and gave Mitzi pain medication and antibiotics.
Initially, the doctors wanted to wait for Mitzi’s condition to stabilize before examining her leg wound more closely. However, the Yorkie had to be rushed to intensive care at RSCPA Putney after a few hours.
By that time, Mitzi’s left shoulder had swollen due to a fractured shoulder blade. The bone and tissue already had an infection as well. The vets decided that amputation of the injured leg was the best option for the dog.
The Yorkie spent some time recovering at RSPCA Putney. Once she bounced back from the surgery, Mitzi returned to Mayhew to await adoption.
The staff members observed that Mitzi didn’t seem to mind the loss of one front leg at all. In fact, she was soon running and jumping around happily.
The Yorkie’s affectionate and cheerful nature helped her find a forever home. Her fur mom, Helle Hammonds, reports that Mitzi, who’s now known as Mini, settled in quickly and got along well with her other pooch, Missy.
Helle also shares that having only three legs doesn’t stop Mini from being her sweet and playful self at all. Watch the Yorkie enjoying the sunshine here:
Today we've been sharing our three-legged animals waiting for homes at The Mayhew…and meet Mitzi, the sweet little Yorkie! Sadly this adorable girl hasn't had the best time lately after she was no longer wanted and had to have her front left leg amputated due to an injury. Mitzi has coped incredibly well on three legs and gets around just fine – and as you can see, loves running around the park! Though this two-year-old girl can be a little shy at first, once she gets to know you she is the most affectionate dog who'd make a pawfect companion. Please share to help find Mitzi the forever home she so deserves www.themayhew.org/mitzi
